Maryam Mirzakhani, 40 years old Iranian lady who had won prestigious award in Mathematics “Mathematics Fields Medal” dies of breast cancer. In 2014 she was among 4 persons who had won this award which is equivalent to Nobel prize. She was teaching at Stanford University. Stanford University had announced the news of hear death.
Stanford Press announcement said while addressing her death
Mirzakhani worked on theoretical mathematics, moduli spaces, teichmuller theory, hyperbolic geometry, ergodic theory and symplectic geometry. Pioneering these theories she was able to manipulate complexities of curved surfaces spheres, doughnut shapes, and even amoebas.
She was born in Tehran and got her early education from Iran and then moved to USA and pursue her study in Harvard University. President Hassan Rohani has expressed deep sorrow over her death saying
“The Grievous passing of Maryam Mirzakhani, the eminent Iranian and world-renowned mathematician, is very much heart-rending.”
Breast cancer is mainly in women and according to stats about 40,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Survival rate for women is 90% which indicates a 5 year survival after treatment.
